Pinnacle Design/Build’s vegetated retaining walls systems is an eco-conscious option with the qualities of a sustainable solution where concrete non-vegetated walls are traditionally used.

With comparable strength and functionality of segmental block, cast-in-place and stone filled MSE retaining walls, Pinnacle’s MSE Vegetated Slope retaining wall system works when your site requires a retaining wall for grade separation with a dual function of being aesthetically pleasing and blending into the environment.

Pinnacle Design/Build vegetated wall systems are ideal in environmentally sensitive areas or when there is a need for an alternative to traditional hardscapes.  Instead, Pinnacle uses reinforcing geo textile materials and/or welded wire baskets forms which are filled with soil which can be planted with native foliage or hydroseeded with grass.  Then over time, the retaining wall virtually disappears over time as the vegetation grows to hide the underlying structure.

Pinnacle Design/Build’s vegetated wall systems:

  • allow/contribute to LEED points being earned on projects
  • allow for the use less expensive on-site infill materials which saves cost
  •  have traditionally have been counted as green space under most zoning codes, thus allowing for more developable space per square foot of building site
  • allows rain water to collect through the wall fascia, maximizing storm water collection, and minimizing runoff
  • uses less concrete compared to traditional retaining walls, helping to reduce heat island effects and storm water runoff while creating urban habitats

Pinnacle Design/Build - MSE Vegetated Slopes Project Profiles

  Home Depot, Villa Rica, GA

PROJECT FACTS:  Slope Area = 31,000 SF; Max Ht = 32 FT

CHALLENGE Create a grade separation along the property line to support the new store and parking lot.

SOLUTION Pinnacle Design/Build provided a 32 ft tall Vegetated MSE vegetated slope as a value added alternative.

VALUE The Vegetated MSE vegetated slope was constructed faster and eliminated utility conflicts with utilities adjacent to the slope.  The “green” solution allowed the very tall steepened slope to blend into the natural surroundings.

  Westchester Commons, Midlothian, VA

PROJECT FACTS:  Wall Area = 42,000 SF; Max Ht =  64 FT

CHALLENGE The developer of this project required a large retaining wall to prevent encroachment into a sensitive wetlands area.  The retaining wall was originally designed to be a segmental retaining wall.  Given the height, this would have been extremely expensive.  In addition, the “concrete” look did not blend well with the surroundings.

SOLUTION Pinnacle Design/Build value engineered the wall into an MSE Vegetated slope that could be constructed more rapidly and with less expense than the original design.

VALUE Our solution saved the developer nearly 20 percent in wall construction costs.  In addition, the vegetated slope blends well with the sensitive environment the it was built to protect.

Buffalo Bayou Bank Protection, Houston, TX

PROJECT FACTS:  Slope Area = 3,000 SF; Max Ht =  10.5 FT

CHALLENGE As part of a City of Houston Parks jogging and bike path improvement project, retaining walls were required at new bridge structure to be constructed over the Buffalo Bayou drainage channel.  These walls needed to provide structural support for the bridge, protect the bank of the bayou from erosion and fit with the natural surroundings of the park.

VALUE The Pinnacle Design/Build solution provided a surprisingly cost effective and green solution that satisfied city officials as well as park goers.

  Lenoir Business Park, Lenoir, NC

PROJECT FACTS:  Wall Area = 94,000 SF; Max Ht =  56 FT

CHALLENGE The developer of this project required nearly 100 acres of relatively flat space to construct several buildings and associated parking.  The project, located in the hilly region of western North Carolina was on a fast track and the reinforced slopes were on the critical path of the project schedule.

SOLUTION Pinnacle Design/Build engineered and constructed four massive MSE Vegetated slopes that averaged over 38 feet in height.

VALUE Pinnacle Design/Build was able to make engineering decisions during the design and construction process that allowed the grading contractors to move at an expedited pace and stay on schedule.  In addition, the vegetated slopes blended nicely with the surrounding area and were less expensive than other options considered.

The Retreat at Lake Tamaha, Tuscaloosa, AL

PROJECT FACTS:  Wall Area = 28,000 SF; Max Ht =  21 FT

CHALLENGE The developer of this collegiate housing project needed to maximize his land use for his hill side property.

SOLUTION Pinnacle Design/Build designed and constructed  a series of vegetated MSE Retaining Walls along the property boundaries.

VALUE Our solution allowed the developer to maximize his land use with retaining walls that blended into the natural environment of his densely forested property.
