Similar to segmental block retaining walls, the stone faced retaining wall system works when your site requires a retaining wall for grade separation. Welded wire baskets forms are used in place of the concrete facing units.  The baskets are wrapped in a biaxial geogrid reinforcement to hold the stone in place while a uniaxial geogrid product is used to reinforce the soil. Stone MSE retaining walls can be installed as quickly as the stone backfill can be placed and compacted behind the wall. Baskets can be made of galvanized steel for applications near water that need to withstand hydraulic forces of streams or rivers.

Pinnacle Design/Build - MSE Stone Faced Retaining Walls Project Profiles

  Woodlands of Knoxville, Knoxville, TN

PROJECT FACTS:  Wall Area = 33,700 SF; Max Ht =  62 FT

CHALLENGE The developer of this high-end college condominium complex had to create useable from the side of a steep hill through the use of retaining walls.  Moreover, the highest wall on the site had to support a storm water detention basin with very little tolerance for settlement.

SOLUTION Pinnacle Design/Build designed and constructed several MSE stone faced retaining walls to create the space and structural support required.

VALUE The Pinnacle Design/Build solution offered significant savings when compared to other types of retaining walls considered for this site.  Our solution also reduced the time required to bring the site to “pad-ready” condition.

Blue Ridge Parkway Landslide Repair, Spruce Pine, NC

PROJECT FACTS:  Wall Area = 5,000 SF; Max Ht = 22.5 FT

CHALLENGE Repair to the parkway at the several landslide locations.

SOLUTION  Pinnacle Design/Build was part of a design team that utilized soil nailing, tiebacks and MSE retaining walls to stabilize the slide and support the reestablished roadway.

VALUE:   The solution of soil nailing and MSE retaining walls provided a high performance and reliable support system.

Sonic Drive-In - Retaining Wall Repair, Ringgold, GA

PROJECT FACTS:  Wall Area = 2,300 SF; Max Ht = 17 FT

CHALLENGE:  The retaining wall supporting the parking lot and drive thru lane of this restaurant failed due to scour at the toe.

SOLUTION Pinnacle Design/Build designed a scour mattress and an MSE buttress wall with a welded wire form (WWF) stone facing to shore the failed block wall.  Our crews constructed this mattress and wall system in front of the failed structure and without incident.

VALUE:  The Pinnacle Design/Build solution was quickly constructed providing the required structural support with minimal disturbance to the restaurant operations.  Compared to other options considered, this approach saved substantial time and money.

Dick Lane Velodrome - Retaining Wall Repair, Atlanta, GA

PROJECT FACTS:  Wall Repair Area = 2,800 SF; Max Ht = 20 FT

CHALLENGE:  A large diameter headwall supporting the velodrome bicycle track failed from foundation scour.

SOLUTION:  Pinnacle Design/Build designed an MSE retaining wall with a welded wire form (WWF) stone facing to replace the failed headwall. Our crews carefully demolished and removed the failed structure and replaced it without incident.

VALUE:  The Pinnacle Design/Build solution saved the owner $100,000 when compared to other potential solutions.

  Wal-Mart, California, MD

PROJECT FACTS:  Wall Area = 5,000 SF; Max Ht = 20 FT

CHALLENGE This retail site required an earth retaining structure that could provide the required grade separation.  In addition, the structure had to be resistant to the erosive forces of water flowing in the adjacent creek and wetland areas.

SOLUTION Pinnacle Design/Build constructed a two stone faced MSE retaining walls along the creek line and wetland areas.

VALUE These structures were more economical than traditional retaining wall structures and provided enhanced erosion control compared to a vegetated slope.
