CHALLENGE: A
segmental retaining wall experienced sliding and
foundation failure shortly after construction. The wall
had to be repaired quickly and correctly to avoid
delaying the project.
SOLUTION: Pinnacle Design/Build visited the site and assessed the
geotechnical and construction quality control
information available, designed and constructed a
foundation improvement / drainage / wall system to get
the project back on track.

A large diameter headwall supporting the velodrome bicycle track
failed from foundation scour.
SOLUTION:
Pinnacle Design/Build designed an MSE retaining wall with a
welded wire form (WWF) stone facing to replace the failed
headwall. Our crews carefully demolished and removed the
failed structure and replaced it without incident.
VALUE:

The retaining wall supporting the parking lot and drive thru
lane of this restaurant failed due to scour at the toe.
SOLUTION:
Pinnacle Design/Build designed a scour mattress and an MSE
buttress wall with a welded wire form (WWF) stone facing to
shore the failed block wall. Our crews constructed
this mattress and wall system in front of the failed
structure and without incident.
VALUE:
The

providing the required structural support with minimal
disturbance to the restaurant operations. Compared to

The segmental retaining wall supporting the parking lot and
drive thru lane of this pharmacy was settling and unstable.
The pavement and fencing above the wall was damaged and
could not be repaired until the wall was stabilized.
SOLUTION:
Pinnacle Design/Build designed
an MSE buttress wall with a welded wire form (WWF) vegetated
facing to shore the failed block wall. Our crews
constructed this wall system in front of the failed
structure and without disrupting store operations or
disturbing the surrounding properties.

wall at less than half the cost of other options considered.

A poorly constructed cast-in-place concrete retaining wall
supporting the slope next to this self storage facility
failed catastrophically. The failure also put an
adjacent high pressure gas line at risk.

a gravity retaining wall using Redi-Rock TM large
block units to replace the failed wall. Our crews
carefully demolished and removed the failed structure and
replaced it without incident.
VALUE:
The

$500,000 when compared to other potential solutions. In
addition, the entire project (design to closeout) was
completed in 28 days without damaging ore even taken the gas

A century old, stacked stone retaining wall supporting
Palisades Drive where it passes over a protected,
environmentally sensitive creek was progressively failing.
The failing wall put the busy roadway above and its
passengers at risk. The wall had to be repaired without
compromising the creek and with minimum impact to traffic.
SOLUTION:
Pinnacle Design/Build designed a gravity buttress wall using
Redi-Rock™ large block units to stabilize the failing wall.
Our crews carefully constructed the challenging repair
without incident.

$300,000 when compared to other solutions considered. In
addition, the entire project (design to closeout) was
completed in less than one month while keeping the Palisades

K-mart store had experienced failure. The owner wanted
the wall repaired without impacting store operations.
SOLUTION:
Pinnacle Design/Build designed
a gravity retaining wall using Redi-Rock TM large
block units to replace a portion of the failed retaining
wall. Our crews carefully demolished and removed the
failed structure, regraded the area and constructed the
gravity replacement wall.

The

was
implemented without complete demolition of the existing wall
which would have impacted store operations. The
partial reconstruction saved significant time and money when

CHALLENGE:
An existing MSE segmental retaining wall (SRW) supporting
this multi-family housing development was bulging and in
danger of collapse.
SOLUTION:
An engineered system consisting of soil nails through the
existing wall (to stabilize the mass) and a matching SRW
facing was constructed.
VALUE:
This composite retaining wall solution of provided a quick
and visually pleasing repair that did not require total
demolition of the failing wall or major disruption to the
residence of the community.
